Loggers

A group of Korean construction workers and Chinese contract laborers at a railway station in Manchuria in the 1930s. Il Hun Sohn, my maternal grandfather (second from the left), was the owner of the construction company where these men were employed. The lumber for the company was supplied from a mountainside in Jongsong, North Hamkyung Province that my grandfather owned. In the early 1940s, my grandfather sold the business and purchased the farmland in Yeoncheon, in an area that soon became part of the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea.
